Genoa is the capital of Liguria, Italy. It is the largest commercial port and an important industrial center in Italy, located in the northwest of Italy. It has a long history and was once the capital of the Republic of Genoa, a maritime hegemon. In 2004, it was selected as the "European Capital of Culture" and is also the hometown of Columbus and Paganini.
