Don't want to take the wrong route or miss the sea of clouds? Here comes the practical advice for Pico do Arieiro

The first time I heard of Pico do Arieiro was from my traveler friends. They were praising the sunrise, the sea of clouds, and the hiking routes here....... I had some reservations at first, thinking that it was just a mountain, how amazing could it be? Until I really stood on top of the clouds, I realized that this is not simply a “photo shrine”, this is not even hiking people are willing to get up at five o'clock in the morning, draped in blankets to stand in the wind mouth blowing the cold wind place. It's worth it, but only if you know how to get there, how to go, how not to step on the mine.

Just how spectacular is it? This is how I see Ariello Peak

You can think of the Ariello Peak as the “Great Wall of Clouds” on the island of Madeira. It's not the highest peak in Madeira (that's Pico Ruivo next door), but it's one of the easiest to get to, has the best views, and is the most photogenic. And here's the kicker: you can drive right up it!

When you stand at Miradouro do Juncal in the early morning, there's a sea of slow-moving clouds beneath your feet, with distant peaks emerging from the clouds sharp as knife blades. You can see the sunlight sprinkled on the clouds like gold dust, and sometimes the shadows of the distant mountains are reflected like silhouettes, and it feels like you've entered a Hayao Miyazaki animation. It's really not an exaggeration, sometimes when the wind blows and the clouds disperse for a moment, the whole world is like suddenly quiet.

Of course, not every day there is this “divine light and shadow”, so to see it, you need luck and strategy. I have stepped on the pit, the first time to come to the noon, the sky is too blue, the sea of clouds is gone, like going to the late scene of the concert only left sweeping aunt. So this article is to help you avoid the pit.

Three routes for different types of you

Three routes for different types of you

The best of Ariello Peak is more than just the view, there are also several hiking routes from here, with different levels of difficulty and scenery for people with different physical strengths and preferences:

Route 1: From the parking lot to Miradouro do Juncal - the starter model

This one is the easiest way: you drive directly to the parking lot of the Ariello Peak (1,818 meters above sea level), and two or three minutes walk from your car is the viewing platform. Take photos, laze around, watch the sunrise, this set can all be done. Suitable for travelers who have little time, limited physical strength or just want to see the scenery.

Tips: It's best to arrive before 7am to see the golden sea of clouds and the first ray of sunshine. Remember to check the weather in advance, don't make a wasted trip.

Route 2: Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo (about 14 kilometers round trip) - Challenging and advanced version!

This is one of the “most famous hiking routes in Madeira” and a pilgrimage route in the hearts of many mountaineers. Starting from the summit of Ariello, you will cross several ridges, tunnels and stairways to reach Pico Ruivo (1862 meters above sea level), the highest peak in Madeira. The scenery is really explosive level all the way down, with a sea of clouds, canyons, cliffs and caves, all the way to the top.

However, this route is of medium to high difficulty and takes almost 6-8 hours round trip, with steep gradients in some sections, so you have to be prepared.

Who is it for? People who are in OK physical condition, like hiking, have good equipment and have enough time.

Who is it not suitable for? Tourists who are afraid of heights, have average physical strength, and come in jeans and canvas shoes (really don't try it, you'll cry).

Route 3: Ariello Peak → Pico Ruivo (one way) + return charter bus/transfer - smart and lazy type

If you don't want to go back, you can just take the one-way trip and have the shuttle bus pick you up at Achada do Teixeira. This way saves time and energy, but only if you book the return shuttle in advance (usually outdoor companies can arrange this).

Key Time Points, Weather Forecast, Dressing Guide

Key Time Points, Weather Forecast, Dressing Guide

The most important thing is to master the “weather” and “time”. These two will determine whether you will make the most of your trip or just miss out on the scenery.

Suggested time:

Sunrise: 5:30am-7:30am arrival time

Day hike: leave before 9am to avoid midday glare and returning too late

Avoid clouds: clouds dissipate after noon, but can become gray and miss the best light

Weather Tips:

Use this website to check real-time cloud heights and weather: mountain-forecast.com (select Pico do Arieiro)

The most common times for clouds to appear: Early in the morning + days with “low clouds and high ground temperatures” in the weather forecast.

If it's sunny downhill, it can be very foggy uphill, and vice versa. So don't just look at the weather in Madeira city!

Dressing Guide:

The mountains are super windy! Even in summer early mornings can be cold, with a body temperature sometimes like 10°C.

Suggestions: windproof jacket + warm inner layer + hiking shoes or non-slip sneakers.

For longer hikes, make sure to carry water, a headlamp (for the tunnel area), sunscreen and snacks.

If you still think of Madeira as a place to see the sea, the summit of Arriero will change your imagination. It's not just the high point of the island, it's the stage that connects you to nature and to yourself. The flow of every cloud and the shape of every rock are like poems carved by wind and time. It's not an exaggeration to say that watching a sea of clouds in Ariero was one of the most rewarding moments of my trip to Portugal. If you're checking out tips or hesitating to get up in the wee hours of the morning to make the trip, my answer is: go, you won't regret it.
