Fort Amsterdam is located in Abanze, central Ghana. It is an old fortress that witnessed colonial history and the slave trade. Originally built by the British in 1638, it was later occupied by the Netherlands and renamed Fort Amsterdam. The fort was once used as a slave prison and had a special slave dungeon. It was destroyed in 1811 and restored by the Ghana Museums and Antiquities Commission in 1951. Today, it is open to the public as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to remind people to remember history.
