Fort St. Jago, also known as Fort Coenraadsburg, is located on a hill in Elmina, Ghana, overlooking Fort St. George (Elmina Castle). Originally built as a church by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it was occupied by the Dutch in 1637 and a fort was built here to defend against inland attacks. The fort was purely military in nature, with no commercial warehouses, and was once a prison and disciplinary institution for European prisoners. In 1979, Fort St. Jago was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and now offers visitors a unique perspective on history and culture.
