Plaza del Carmen

Plaza del Carmen

Plaza del Carmen is a charming cobblestone square nestled in the heart of Camagüey’s historic district. Established in the early nineteenth century around the twin spires of the Nuestra Señora del Carmen church, the plaza is defined by its elegant tinajones—large earthenware water vessels once used to collect rainwater—and atmospheric cast iron lampposts. Sculptures by local artist Martha Jiménez depict everyday scenes of newspaper readers, water sellers, and street musicians, bringing the square to life with a playful yet contemplative human touch. Surrounding colonial-era buildings, including the 1825 church and the former Ursuline convent, frame the space with pastel facades and wrought-iron balconies. A popular gathering place for residents and visitors alike, the plaza hosts cultural performances, artisan markets, and outdoor cafés where guests can sip Cuban coffee while admiring the square’s tranquil beauty. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Plaza del Carmen offers an authentic glimpse into Camagüey’s rich architectural and social traditions.
