Founded in 1929, Calgary Zoo is one of the top ten zoos in North America and the second largest in Canada. It is located on St. George Island in the east of the city and covers an area of 0.3 square kilometers. It is home to more than 1,000 animals of more than 290 species, most of which live in a simulated wild environment. The African area has Canada's only underwater hippo observation pool, as well as a botanical garden, a prehistoric park, etc. It is famous for its endangered wildlife recovery program and is a great place to get close to nature and learn about animals.
