Salamanca is located in the northwest of Spain and is the capital of the Salamanca Province. This historic city was conquered by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC, and later ruled by the Roman Empire and the Moors. It has the oldest university in Spain, which was founded in 1218. Many people from different cultural backgrounds come here to study. It was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 and was named the European Capital of Culture in 2002.
