Basic information about the museum

The Nairobi National Museum was established in 1929, initially to preserve and showcase Kenya's archaeological discoveries and natural heritage. Today, it is part of the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) system and covers a wide range of fields including anthropology, geology, history, culture, and zoology.

Location: The museum is conveniently located in the northern part of Nairobi city center, about 10 minutes drive from the city center and close to the Nairobi River.

Opening hours: 8:30am to 5:30pm daily (including weekends and holidays).

Features of the museum

1. World Famous Human Fossils

If you're interested in the origins of mankind, then Nairobi National Museum's “Human Evolution” exhibit is sure to excite you. On display is the Turkana Boy, a near-complete fossil of an ancient human thought to be the remains of Homo erectus from about 1.6 million years ago. There is also a wide range of early human skulls and tools, demonstrating Kenya's importance in the study of human evolution.

You can take photos in most areas of the museum, but photography may be prohibited in some of the exhibitions, especially in the sections dealing with human remains or sensitive cultural heritage. If you want to take professional photographs or videos, you may need to pay an additional fee and obtain permission.

3. Transportation and parking

There is ample parking in front of the museum, making it suitable for self-drive access. However, if you live in the city center, it may be more convenient to take a taxi (Uber, Bolt, etc.) to avoid traffic jams and the hassle of finding a parking space.

4. Is it family-friendly?

Absolutely suitable!
