The history of Doi Suthep Temple can be traced back to 1383 AD. According to legend, King Mengrai of the Lanna Dynasty in northern Thailand obtained the relics of Sakyamuni Buddha. A monk used a holy elephant to carry the relics to find a place to worship. When the holy elephant walked to Suthep Mountain, it suddenly fell to the ground.
