Located on the Indian Ocean coast of Malindi, Kenya, the Vasco da Gama Pillar is one of the oldest European monuments in East Africa and was established by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in 1498 or 1499. Made of Portuguese limestone and topped with a cross of the Portuguese national emblem, the pillar was originally intended as a navigational marker to guide subsequent navigators. The pillar is now located on a rocky promontory by the sea, overlooking the Indian Ocean, and is one of the most popular historical sites in Malindi. Currently, the pillar is managed by the National Museum of Kenya, and visitors can purchase a pass to visit four attractions including the pillar, Portuguese church, pillar house and heritage complex museum.
