Balek Wildlife Sanctuary

Balek Wildlife Sanctuary

Balek Wildlife Sanctuary is located approximately 20 kilometers south of Madang City, covering an area of about 470 hectares, and is jointly managed by the Awa tribe. The sanctuary is surrounded by tropical rainforests and features the “Smell Wara” sulfur-rich stream and caves, with crystal-clear water where visitors can often feed turtles and eels. The sanctuary also served as a filming location for “Robinson Crusoe” and is home to a variety of bird and mammal species. Visitors can explore the area on foot or by boat, immersing themselves in the harmonious blend of nature and history.
