Located in the center of Maldonado, Uruguay, the Cathedral of San Fernando (Catedral de San Fernando de Maldonado) is a neoclassical building that was built in 1801 and completed in 1895 after nearly a century. The main altar inside was created by Spanish woodcarver Antonio Veiga, who won two awards at the Continental Exposition in Buenos Aires in 1882. The altar is dedicated to the statue of Our Lady of Carmen, the patron saint of seafarers from the steamship "San Tandel" that sank near Lobos Island in 1829. In addition, the church also houses a painted statue of "Christ of the Passion" of unknown origin, which is said to have drifted from the seaside. Today, this national historical monument is not only a center of religious activities, but also hosts cultural performances and choral concerts from time to time, attracting many tourists to visit.
