Lalibela is a historic town in northern Ethiopia, renowned for its spectacular rock-hewn churches. Named after King Lalibela, who commissioned these churches in the 12th century, the city is a significant pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The town's 11 monolithic churches, carved directly into the pink volcanic rock, are a testament to the devotion and craftsmanship of that era. The most famous, St. George's Church, is shaped like a cross. The churches, connected by a labyrinth of tunnels and passages, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lalibela's unique architecture and spiritual importance make it a must-visit destination.
