In the heart of Colombia's coffee region, Nevado del Ruiz, 5,321 meters above sea level, is like a sleeping giant, with its snow-covered peak shining mysteriously in the sun. This active volcano is only 40 kilometers from Manizales, but it seems to be in another world - the extreme contrast from tropical coffee plantations to glacial snowfields makes it a mecca for adventurers. But did you know? Even if you don't join an expensive multi-day climbing tour, as long as you master this carefully designed route, you can complete this extreme challenge of 5,000 meters above sea level in one day, and you can also rush back to the city to drink hot "tinto" coffee!

At 4:30 in the morning, Manizales is still shrouded in darkness, but your adventure has already begun. The 4WD off-road vehicle (about 150,000 pesos/vehicle, which can seat 4 people) reserved one day in advance will pick you up at the hotel on time. This is the key to saving time - ordinary vehicles cannot cope with the last 10 kilometers of gravel roads. It is recommended to bring: cold-proof clothing (-5℃ on the top of the mountain), high-top hiking shoes, sunscreen, simple oxygen cylinders (available at pharmacies, 30,000 pesos) and at least 2 liters of water. On the way, you will stop for 20 minutes in the town of La Esperanza (3,200 meters above sea level) for breakfast. The "calentado" fried rice here can provide lasting energy.

Arrived at the entrance of Los Nevados National Park (4,100 meters above sea level) at 6:30, with a ticket price of 80,000 pesos including insurance. Here comes the point: Choose the "Ruta Express" Express Route, a private route hidden by local guides that saves 1.5 hours compared to the regular route. The first 2 hours are spent ascending along the zigzag trail covered with volcanic ash, with a slope of about 35 degrees, and stopping every 30 minutes to acclimate to the altitude. At 4,800 meters, you will pass through the fumarole area, where sulfur-smelling steam gushes out from the cracks in the ground. Remember to cover your mouth and nose with a scarf.

Arrive at the edge of the glacier around 9:30, and you must put on crampons (provided by the guide). The final section of the summit is the most dangerous - there may be ice cracks hidden under the seemingly flat snow surface, so you must follow the footsteps of the predecessors. When the GPS shows 5,200 meters, congratulations! The crater that suddenly opens in front of you will take your breath away: in the gray-black bowl with a diameter of 800 meters, there is a blue vortex formed by rolling sulfur smoke. This visual impact is enough to offset all fatigue. The guide usually gives 30 minutes to take pictures, but please note:
No standing within 3 meters of the edge of the crater
Drone flight requires advance application
Must descend before noon, and clouds will completely cover the route in the afternoon.
On the way back, take the Valle de las Tumbas valley. This shortcut covered with volcanic rocks will allow you to return to the parking lot before 14:00. On the way, you will pass a natural hot spring (entrance fee 20,000 pesos). It is a wonderful experience to relieve muscle soreness in the mineral-rich 40℃ hot water. After arriving back in Manizales at 15:30, head straight to the La Suiza bakery in the city center. Their special "chocolate con queso" can quickly replenish blood sugar. If you have a mild altitude sickness, the oxygen bar at the nearby Clinica San Marcel Hospital (50,000 pesos per hour) is a safe choice.
When night falls, you may be lost in the photos of the crater on your phone - your fingers, which were still trembling in the ice and snow world in the morning, are now holding a warm cup of coffee. This is the magic of Ruiz Volcano: it tests visitors with the most demanding environment, but gives the most generous rewards. After those seemingly impossible time numbers are broken one by one, you will find that "one-day conquest" is not only a victory in route planning, but also a re-recognition of your potential. Now, it's time to plan the next adventure. Maybe try the volcanic sunrise in the early morning? But don't forget, tomorrow morning, your muscles will honestly remind you: what happened today.
