The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha, located on the banks of the Mondego River in Coimbra, is a striking medieval ruin that tells a story of devotion, resilience, and time’s relentless power. Founded in 1286, the monastery was once a flourishing convent for Poor Clare nuns, including Queen Isabel of Aragon, a Portuguese saint known for her kindness and miracles.However, the monastery’s low-lying location made it vulnerable to constant flooding, and by the 17th century, it was abandoned in favor of the new Santa Clara-a-Nova Monastery on higher ground. Left to the elements, Santa Clara-a-Velha was slowly buried under mud and water until extensive excavations in the 20th century revealed its haunting beauty once more.
