Kairouan is the fourth largest city in the east of central Tunisia and the ancient capital of Tunisia. It was built in 670 and was the capital of the Aghlabid Dynasty from 800 to 909. It is one of the four holy places of Islam. There are many mosques in the city, which is known as the "City of Three Hundred Mosques". The famous Great Mosque of Kairouan is the oldest mosque in North Africa. It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 1988.
