History of the Museum

Museo Marítimo Nacional was first born in 1915, and its origins are full of legends. Initially, the museum was set up on the battleship "Huáscar", which fought bravely for Peru in the Pacific War in the 19th century and was captured by the Chilean fleet in 1879. Despite many fierce naval battles and vicissitudes, the battleship "Huáscar" still preserves a large number of precious historical objects. Many years later, the battleship was carefully restored, and those objects carrying historical memories were also properly preserved. As time went by, the Chilean National Navy decided to move all the items on display on the "Huáscar" to the Arturo Prat Naval School on the Artillery Hill in Valparaíso. Today, the museum is located in the former Naval School building at 45 Paseo 21 de Mayo, Valparaíso, and continues to pass on the flame of maritime culture.

Many exhibits in the museum are closely linked to Chile's history in naval battles, especially the Pacific War in the 19th century. Here, you can see the weapons used at that time, such as the majestic cannons, the lines on the guns record the traces of time and the baptism of war; there are also uniforms worn by soldiers.
