Lae Botanic Gardens covers an area of approximately 38–57 hectares and was established in 1949. It is an important plant research and exhibition center under the Papua New Guinea National Forestry Research Institute. The gardens preserve lowland tropical rainforests, with streams flowing through them, and feature approximately 1,500–3,000 species of native and exotic plants, including orchids, bromeliads, palms, and medicinal plants. The garden features a greenhouse dedicated to displaying orchid and arum family plants, as well as a large herbarium housing over 300,000–400,000 specimens, making it an important plant repository in the South Asian region. The park also houses a retired RAAF DC-3 aircraft, a testament to World War II history, and a popular photo spot. Operating hours are from 9 AM to 4 PM daily (extended to 4:40 PM on weekends), with adult tickets priced at approximately K5, making it ideal for nature enthusiasts and family outings.
