Lae War Cemetery is located next to the Botanical Gardens in the center of Lae City. It is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and was established in 1944, with official handover taking place in 1947. It is the final resting place for 2,818 Allied soldiers who fought in the Salamaua-Lae Campaign during World War II, including 444 whose identities remain unknown. The cemetery features the Lae Memorial, honoring 328 unknown soldiers, whose names are inscribed on a bronze plaque. Japanese forces launched fierce attacks on Lavae in January and March 1942, making the area a strategic location. ANZAC Day is held here annually on April 25 to commemorate fallen members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). The Lavae War Cemetery, with its neat white headstones, lush green lawns, and solemn crosses, serves as an important site for commemorating World War II history and the sacrifices of the Commonwealth.
